Electric Motors

Getting better efficiency from electric motors is more important than ever, and power electronics are playing a vital role. Electric motors are used in a broad range of industrial, commercial and residential applications including fans, pumps, compressors, elevators and refrigerators. Due to the large usage of electric motors, increasing the efficiency of motor-drive systems could result in a significant reduction in global electricity consumption. Motor drives are becoming more efficient as power electronic devices like power switches (IGBTs and MOSFETs), gate drivers and bias supplies are being incorporated. Semiconductors also play a major role in electric motors by boosting performance, minimizing power losses and optimizing thermal management.

Advanced Electronics Solutions from Rogers Corporation increase the efficiency, performance and reliability of electric motor drives.

Improving Semiconductor Efficiency and Reliability

Within the IGBT and MOSFET power modules, power substrates provide interconnections and cool components. In motor drives, curamik® ceramic substrates are designed to carry higher currents, provide higher voltage isolation and operate over a wide temperature range. The high heat conductivity, along with the high heat capacity and thermal spreading of the thick copper cladding, makes curamik substrates indispensable to power electronics, particularly for mission-critical applications like control systems. The mechanical stress on silicon chips mounted directly on the substrate (Chip on Board) is very low, since the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the ceramic substrate is better matched to the CTE of silicon compared to substrates using a metal or a plastic basis.

Distributing Power More Efficiently

ROLINX® busbars serve as power distribution highways for components within motor drives. These laminated busbars provide a customized liaison between the power source and capacitors, integrated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) or complete modules. These flat, compact, laminated multilayer busbars are the perfect solution for an efficient and cool-running operation. They feature low inductance, controlled partial discharge, high current capabilities and compactness.

As the global leader in the world of laminated busbars, ROLINX busbars’ main differentiators are superb quality and reliability, electrical and mechanical expertise, co-engineering and flexible lead times.
