Measurements and methods to determine dielectric constant (Dk or relative permittivity) are essential for characterizing a circuit laminate as part of a circuit design process. But many different Dk test methods have emerged and evolved over the years, often yielding different results for the same material. Understanding how Dk test methods differ can be useful when choosing one of those methods for measurements on a material of interest. When designing and developing a prototype circuit, the accuracy of the Dk value used in the circuit modeling and simulation can make a substantial difference in the performance of the prototype, especially at millimeter wave frequencies where having accurate Dk values is critical.
