At Rogers Corporation a large part of our culture is our dedication to safety, in both the workplace and our environment. Many of our products enable safety-related applications, embodying the “protect” aspect of our commitment to help power, protect and connect our world. In this blog, let’s look at the Protect component of our company tagline, and examine how Rogers’ materials help support applications that enable a safer environment.

ADAS

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technologies have adapted significantly to increase vehicle occupants and road users’ safety, supporting a “Vision Zero” future with zero traffic fatalities and accidents. Vision Zero vehicles’ advanced radar sensors play an important role in enabling ADAS functions, like collision avoidance, and higher levels of automated driving, including adaptive cruise control or automatic lane change assist. Radar operates in combination with other in vehicle sensors like camera, ultrasound and advanced global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) to continuously perceive a 360 degree field of view of the vehicle’s surroundings. It can also help monitor the mental condition of the driver to enable a safe and comfortable ride.

Man in Hardhat

Examples of products used in these applications include our product line of RO4000® materials in 24GHz radar sensors which continuously monitor the presence, direction and speed of vehicles in adjacent lanes to alert drivers of possible dangers. Additionally, RO3000® laminates in 77GHz radar sensors support a safer driving environment by assisting in forward collision warning and automatic emergency brake assist to prevent fatal accidents with other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. These applications of Rogers’ products provide drivers with better safety and awareness features, as well as enable advanced connectivity with other drivers to prevent accidents and actively keep our roads safe.

Similarly, the industrial safety market has experienced advancements in protective equipment and gear. Rogers PORON® Comfort materials enable safe and comfortable industrial footwear for workers who are on their feet for extensive periods of time during their shifts. Designed with work hazards like continuous pressure from standing and exposure to dangerous tools in mind, PORON® Comfort materials provide underfoot support. Comfort cushioning and long-term wear technology effectively distributes pressure while maintaining the original fit and shape of the shoe to overcome industrial footwear challenges. Our XRD® M-Guard materials provide upper foot protection to industrial workers by providing durability for even balance that reduces soreness and the risk of shin splints. These materials combined protect workers from drop hazards and ankle impacts while enabling comfort to keep workers on their feet for longer hours. Rogers’ industrial safety materials enable workplace safety by providing protection for the entire foot from heel to toe.

Power Grid

Another safety application of Rogers’ materials is Smart Grid technology. This allows for intelligent distribution, enabling utility companies to predict outages before they happen and thus avoid any lapses in power. Our Power Electronics Solutions products, including ROLINX® busbars and curamik® ceramic substrates, help to protect power grid systems by reducing power consumption and ensuring reduced costs to utility companies and consumers. These products support Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), guaranteeing power during any fluctuations in frequency or amplitude and protecting equipment from voltage distortions. With this technology, places like hospitals can always remain connected to better keep patients safe and healthy.

The next time you drive down the road and hear a warning beep from your vehicle sensor, lace up a pair of work boots or visit a hospital, consider the attention to design and safety required to support the products and facilities you see and use in your daily life. Rogers Corporation provides exceptional materials so manufacturers can create products that protect the community and contribute to a safer environment.
